TIME TO RISE TO THE D&I CHALLENGE

Shining a light on diversity & inclusion best practice

Gender equality has been named as the number one area for the US insurance industry to address, according to a survey carried out by Lloyd’s of London’s Dive In Festival.

 

The issue ranked top with 64 percent of respondents, followed by culture and ethnicity (52 percent), age and multi-generational working (41 percent), mental health (34 percent) and family & care responsibility (29 percent) in a survey of 5,000 North and South American insurance professionals quizzed this Fall.

 

In addition, almost all of those surveyed – 95 percent - declared that an inclusive working culture that values and respects everyone equally is important to clients and other stakeholders too.

 

The statistics from Dive In underline a real appetite across the (re)insurance market to embrace diversity and inclusion (D&I) – not just due to legal and regulatory demands such as those behind the US National Labor Relations Board and the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission – but because it is good for business.

 

An influential study from McKinsey, Delivering Through Diversity shows that companies in the top quartile for diversity in gender are 15 percent more likely to financially outperform their peers than those in the bottom quartile. And those in the top quartile for ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to post better financial performance.

 

D&I is now widely becoming recognized as something all companies need to embrace and weave into the fabric of their organization if they are going to attract, retain and inspire talent; have products and services that relate to their customers; and remain competitive in the global marketplace.

 

The Insider Honors US have been designed to highlight and praise best practice in D&I in the US (re)insurance market – and by recognizing and rewarding those driving the market forward, help spread the message that D&I matters.

 

Issues including the gender pay gap and cases of discrimination over race, disability, sexual orientation, religion, belief, or age have dominated the news recently. But it is only by recognizing the challenges – and acknowledging and celebrating those companies and organizations taking positive action – that the market will drive forward and see real change. The Diversity & Inclusion Award is open to all insurance and reinsurance intermediaries, risk carriers, agents and investors working in the US (re)insurance market, as well as the trade bodies, organizations, associations and clubs that serve them. The focus should be on programs, events and other activities designed to promote and further inclusion and diversity.

 

This category shall include, but is not limited to, activity improving the racial, LGBTQ+, gender, disability, age and socio-economic diversity of the global (re)insurance market carried out in the year to 1 October 2019. Judges will be particularly interested in proof of the efficacy of the initiative(s), the wider positive impact across the marketplace as well as the level of innovation, creativity and originality of entries.
